To get started with this recipe, we have to prepare a few ingredients. You can have roasted chestnuts using 4 ingredients and 3 steps. Here is how you cook that.
The ingredients needed to make Roasted Chestnuts:
- Get Good amount of chestnuts
- Make ready Water for soaking and cooking
- Get Coarse salt
- Prepare BBQ and aluminum tray
The flames should be licking the bottom and sides of the foil or pan. Place scored chestnuts in a chestnut pan like this (it has holes in the flat bottom). Transfer the chestnuts to the oven and roast them until the skins have pulled back from the cuts and the nutmeats have softened. Remove the nuts from the oven and pile them into a mound in an old towel.
Steps to make Roasted Chestnuts:
- Soak chestnuts in water for at least 2 hours. Fire up the BBQ. Make a slit on flat side of chestnut from top to bottom
- Make holes in an aluminum tray (I also created a device using a cloak hanger to help shake it, use tongs instead) put chestnuts in tray and start roasting. Roast for about 35-40 mins, spray with water and sprinkle with salt and shake every 5-10 mins. The salt helps to make the skin peel easily

Transfer the chestnuts to the oven and roast them until the skins have pulled back from the cuts and the nutmeats have softened. Remove the nuts from the oven and pile them into a mound in an old towel. Place nuts in a skillet with butter and saute over high heat until the butter is melted and the chestnuts are well coated. Place skillet in oven and roast until they are golden on top. It might take a little more or less time depending on the size and quality of the chestnuts.
